Emotions play a key role in the functioning of a person. Emotions serve as incoming information that propel us to take action. Sometimes people are so overwhelmed by emotion because in their brain it is seen as something negative or because they feel their emotions more intensely than others. This generally leads to emotional avoidance, with the person ignoring all emotions and not wanting to feel their feelings.
At the JEFT Institute, our dedicated clinicians are trained to help our clients understand the meaning and importance of emotions, which gives them the ability to deal and manage emotions.
Emotions are felt even when one tries to avoid them. Avoidance leads to dysfunction and unhappiness because as Bessel Van der Kolk puts it, “The body keeps the score” and causes our emotions to manifest themselves in a physical way if we deny ourselves the ability to feel them emotionally.
